Shadow
a poem about lightlessness
This one isn’t a lurker but a leader. it does not tread lightly. This one makes demands: turn your back to the light, for the sun will beat down what isn’t already beaten. This one speaks volumes. so loud it vibrates. blame the sun, its only goal is domination, jealous of anything its hands cannot touch. i focus on This one’s edges, the razor thin of it, how it slices me into the Earth, and as I follow This one grows taller, stronger, more resolute as time passes: away from warmth, away from the stinging on my neck. keep your chin down, do not let the brightness avert your gaze. let this be a reminder, This one says, that comfort is blinding. At last you arrive at a door. The shadow evolves into a still night. There is nothing left to blame. There is nothing left to show if this is home. No proof of how far you walked except aching legs.

Sometimes the hurt is proof you did something. Sometimes that has to be enough.
